New York City Break Top Tips

  • Walk over the Brooklyn Bridge and watch the sun setting over the famous Manhattan skyline.
  • Climb to the “Top of the Rock” – you can now go to the top of the Rockefeller Centre on 5th Avenue and enjoy a sensational view of Manhattan. It’s a better view than from the top of the Empire State Building as you can see Central Park and also the Empire State Building itself – less queuing too…
  • There’s a great outlet centre for shopping in New Jersey: Woodbury Common Premium Outlet Centre. Get a coach from the Port Authority Building in midtown – prices are amazing and all the top brands are there including Gap, Ralph Lauren, Nike etc.
  • Top department stores to visit are Macy’s, Saks 5th Avenue, & Bloomingdales.
  • Go to Dean & Deluca for a great cup of Italian coffee and cake. Their deli shop in Soho is amazing and a great place to buy a picnic lunch in the hot summer.
  • Stroll in Central Park like the locals on a Sunday – there are also some free guided walks and entertainment in the summer.
  • MOMA – the newly reopened Museum of Modern Art is a great place to visit due to its central location on 5th Avenue and amazing exhibitions.
  • Don’t pay for breakfast in your hotel – enjoy a traditional New York bagel and coffee at one of the many delis. Sushi is also really good value compared to the UK.
  • Nolita (north of little Italy) & Soho (South of Houston Street) are great areas for shopping and for good value restaurants.
  • From the airport take a yellow cab from the rank – it’s a fixed price to anywhere in Manhattan.
  • If a building has an arched entrance it means that you can walk through it (and avoid the crowds). Many skyscrapers have public areas where you can rest your weary limbs and enjoy some peace and quiet! The older buildings have amazing interiors (such as the French building and the Chrysler building).
  • Take the Staten Island ferry past the Statue of Liberty – it’s free!
